The Boston Public Library (BPL), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Studies Project (MSP) at UMass Boston, will use the BPL’s National Historic Landmark McKim Building, its fine arts collection, and its setting on Copley Square to present an institute in which teachers investigate the art and architecture of public buildings and spaces, their impact on the life of their communities, and how those things can be used as effective teaching tools. For its lectures and presentations, the institute will bring together artists, curators, architects, and historians who are leaders in their fields and have substantial experience working with the resources of the BPL. All materials and presentations at the institute align with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

FINAL PROJECT: Each participant will develop and implement a 5-day curriculum unit (consecutive or non-consecutive days) based on the materials presented in the institute, either using the BPL itself as a teaching tool, or using it as a model for identifying buildings of artistic merit in participants' own communities. These units will be presented to the group at the callback on November 18th, 2006.

CREDIT:
The cost is free to participants and each participant will receive $150 to implement their curriculum unit. 60 PDPs will be awarded upon successful completion of the Institute. In addition three "post-baccalaureate credits" may be earned through UMass Boston for successful completion of the Summer Institute. The graduate credit requires a registration fee of $295. Participants in the Institute who wish to apply for graduate credit should bring a check for $295 to the first session on July 10, payable to "UMass Boston." UMB graduate registration forms will be available there for you to fill out. If your graduate credit charges are to be paid by an outside agency, a payment authorization from that agency must accompany your registration.

Please note that these are called "post-baccalaureate credits" because -- although they are accepted by most school systems for advancement and promotion, and are accepted as transfer credits by many colleges and universities -- they cannot be applied towards a degree at UMass, since the Summer Institute is not a part of any established UMass graduate program. Interested participants should confirm with their school administration that these credits are accepted by their school system.
