Walking Tour Notes Assignment

Walk around your neighborhood. You decide what makes up your neighborhood, but please limit yourself to a small area. In preparation for writing a walking tour, take notes on the features of your neighborhood. You must include the following items:
1. A description of the limits that you are describing. (e.g. from Main St. to Elm St., from 1st Ave. to 10th Ave., from Roberts MS to the Fells)
2. Human-made Landmarks including, but not limited to: parks, playgrounds, historic places, stores, businesses, schools, government buildings, places important to your life, other
3. Natural landmarks including but not limited to: trees, ponds, hills, gardens, forests, grass in general, other
4. Important or famous people in your neighborhood
5. Transportation: bus routes, major roads, other

Walking Tour Assignment

1. Review your Walking Tour Notes
2. Add information to your tour by expanding geographic area, increasing level of detail, or choosing a new area.
3. Convert your notes into walking tour format (like the example in class).
4. Prepare publishing copy.
5. Create map of walking tour area. Map must be completed in ink or crayon - no pencil. Map must be 81/2 x 11 inches (regular paper size).
6. Hand in the entire project on Tuesday, June 18

I. Introduction - describe the absolute and relative location of the area, tell where it is, what town, what streets, etc. Tell what region it is in.
II. Description - what are the landmarks in the area, what makes it interesting, describe the place. Include information about how the environment is changed by humans and tell how movement is displayed
III. Conclusion - thank the reader for following your walking tour. Add a sales pitch for why this area is a good one to live or work.
