Children's Literature for Teaching Massachusetts Studies Cheryl Ann Schwartz, Elementary Consultant  Children's literature is not just for reading period.  Use literature for social studies because:  It involves children in narrative, from which they gain a sense of chronology.  It provides context for facts and dates.  It requires a sustained relationship with characters, allowing for identification with personality and period.
