KWL Chart and Video

“More Than Bows and Arrows”

 

Grade: 3

 

Unit: Wampanoag Tribe

 

Goal: (Enduring understanding)

Students will identify background knowledge of Native American Tribes.

Students will learn that some ideas of Native Americans are misleading.

Chart paper with KWL written on it

Individual KWL charts for students

Video “More Than Bows and Arrows” (see reference list)

 

Development and Selection of Activities:

¨      KWL Chart (Know, Want to know/Will learn, Learned)

¨      Students will list what they already know about the Native Americans, including any misconceptions they may have.

¨      Students will list what they would like to know about the Native Americans, particularly the Wampanoag Tribe.

¨      Students will do independent brainstorming and then create a class KWL Chart

¨      The chart will be hung in a conspicuous area through the duration of the unit.

¨      Students will view the video “More Than Bows and Arrows”

¨      Students will choose one idea from the “K” column and one question from the “W” column.

¨      During the video, they will watch for information either supporting or negating the information from the “K” column.  They will also watch for information answering the question from the “W” column.

¨      Students will also be able to write or illustrate new/interesting ideas, thoughts, or questions provoked by the video.

 

Content:

¨      Most content in this opening lesson will be generated from students’ background knowledge of Native Americans.  The video will be used to clear some possible misconceptions of the Native Americans.

Students will hand in their assignments.  The teacher will read over students’ answers to determine any knowledge gaps that may need to be addressed.
